PEDW (Patient Episode Database for Wales)

PEDW is the Welsh equivilent of the HES (Hospital Episode Statistics) data collected in England.

On an adhoc basis the statisticians will make a request for a data extract from PEDW. To do this they will usually generate a list of RR_NOs to which Systems will add NHS Numbers and other demographics.

The expanded file will be sent to NWIS (NHS Wales Informatic Services) via their Secure File Sharing Portal ( https://securefileshare.wales.nhs.uk ). To access this they need to create an account for you which then needs to be granted permissions to the folder in which the file is to be uploaded. The Portal will inform you via e-mail when your file has been recevied and when they have uploaded a file in response.

The recevied file(s) should have any unneccesary demographics removed and then be passed on to the statisticians.
